Text Box: CARNIVAL

The squadron likes to take part in the local carnival procession each year to be visible to the public at large and to publicise our recruiting evening which is held a couple of weeks later.

This page shows the finished views of our most recent entries and gives a link to a detailed look at the construction of the Year 2000 version.

SEPTEMBER 2000 ENTRY ~ THE FLYING SLUG ~ 1st PRIZE IN CLASS

Normally we build on a lorry trailer but for 2000 we decided to create a walking tableau.  The basic concept was the Chinese Dragon but heavily modified to vaguely resemble a second World War glider.  It actually started life as a C130 Hercules but lacking engines we felt that the glider tag was more appropriate.  It was well received by the crowds on procession evening and even got a mention on the local BBC radio station.  You will see why we called it the Flying Slug from the wingless picture in the construction section. September 1999 Entry ~ The Fruit Machine  ~ 3rd Prize in Class

The idea was that when money was thrown into the target jackpot collecting tray  the outside operator would ring the fire bell and pull on the big one armed bandit lever.  Those inside would then display random fruit symbols.

The fruit machine was 2-sided to offer the same entertainment to both sides of the road during the procession.

Good idea ~ but many in the crowd aimed at the row of holes along the top (where the fruits were displayed) rather than at the Perspex fronted target.  Those inside quickly donned kevlar helmets for self protection.  The outside operator (me!) had the bruises from misaimed coins for several days.  We did collect a lot of money.

September 1998 Entry ~ The Great Escape ~ 1st Prize in Class

A major construction effort which well justified its first place award.  It depicted a prisoner of war hut complete with bunks and obligatory stove ~ beneath which was a tunnel (complete with workers) leading to an escape hatch at the far end of the trailer. Hapless guards patrolled above the tunnel or, as shown here, rested on the vaulting box ~ an essential part of any PoW camp !.

September 1997 ~ ATC Activities  ~ 3rd Prize in Class

A much simpler concept put together on the day of the carnival procession to illustrate fieldcraft training, shooting, sports, “blue” activities and our link to the RAF.  The object over the rear wheels is a 1/3rd scale Harrier.
