2397 (Upavon) Detached Flight

This unit is now disbanded.  This page is retained for historical information only

A Detached Flight is a sub-unit of an ATC Squadron but run at a separate location and is largely independent in running its own programme of activities. It can however call on the staffing and material resources of the main squadron. Detached Flight cadets have equal opportunities with the Squadron cadets to participate in activities such as gliding, flying, visits, annual camps, sports and shooting.

It is our policy that Detached Flight cadets are kept informed of Squadron activities and are free to participate in any that they choose. From time to time the Detached Flight cadets are taken to Devizes to take part in the main Squadron activities for an evening.

The Upavon unit was formed at the request of RAF Upavon to provide an outlet for the sons and daughters of RAF personnel as well as local residents. During this time the unit gained large numbers but has reduced in size since the Royal Air Force moved out of the base and was replaced by the regular Army. The name of the base changed to Trenchard Lines which is a tribute to Lord Trenchard who commanded the Royal Flying Corps when it was a part of the Army during World War 1 and became Marshall of the Royal Air Force.

The Upavon airfield was the original base for No 1 Flying Training School and the hangar used by the Detached Flight is a listed building.
